I loved reading this! Inspired. Yet I find ChatGPT a useful tool and although I can imagine the problems it creates in learning to write, I’d be interested to know what specific problems you see in your students. Would you say there are some ways it can be useful? Just curious
Hi Carole! Thank you so much for reading and commenting! My sense is that ChatGPT takes away my students’ need to think for themselves. It’s not only that AI can write papers for them. If I let them, they would be happy to let it read for them and summarize/analyze things they can’t understand. I’m struggling to see how AI is useful to young people when we want them to learn critical thinking. For those of us who have honed those skills over decades, it might be less of a threat.
Just my two cents worth, of course! So grateful to you, again, for reading and engaging! And I just noticed you subscribed! Thank you so much for all of it! <3
Thanks Diane, I agree it’s worrying, I wouldn’t want to have missed out on my education in that way- a summary is nothing like working your way through the real thing. It’s essential to train in critical thinking rather than be spoon fed. I enjoyed your interview with AI too- it has an answer for everything!
I’ve never used ChatGPT and this sent shivers down my spine. The way it says “me” and almost assumes a personality? Absolutely not. Terrifying. This is a topic we need to keep going. Our brains are so beautiful as they are, seeing how they express and struggle and work to use resources is sacred. 💫
And it's great that you've stayed away from ChatGPT -- I hope you can continue to do so. It's getting harder and harder. I'm cheering for you and your generation! You guys are going to be the ones to save us from ourselves.
Right?! And just as maddening as the students, in some ways, are the administrators who don’t give much direction about what we should do about AI, other than have students do all of their writing in blue books, which means, what, that teachers are the only ones with any homework? And when do we actually have a chance to teach them something in class? It’s killing me.
Yikes! Nothing worse than reading blue book handwriting. 🤣🤣🙈 that’s precisely why I’m in editorial. Teaching feels like no matter how much you do, how many hours you put in, you’re never doing enough and all the extra work is put on you and students each year seemed to do less and less work themselves. I love that my job finishes at the end of the day. So I feel for you and it’s remarkable and I’m sure you’re an incredible teacher. It’s such a difficult job. 🫶🏻 I hope the admin starts to create policies and support staff. 🤞🏻
Amen to your job switch! And your assessment of teaching! And blue book writing too. We're not even teaching handwriting anymore (can't figure out how to add an emoji, but it would be an eyeroll if I could)
And I can't vouch for my teaching skills, sure hope I'm imparting some info to the students who care. I'm touched by the vote of confidence. All I konw is that I'm putting in too much time for the now-minimum-wage pay.
Thank you for being such a lovely Substack friend! I appreciate you!
That tone it takes, man. “Hey—fair.” Ugh. I applaud you for trying! 😂 At the least, this exchange highlights the curiosity of the human mind to understand, debate, and compromise (on your side, not its).
Thank you so much for reading! You are a true Substack friend, and I really appreciate it!! Was just hoping to make readers laugh at the absurdity. Ugh is right! Hands together that some human out there figures out a way to save us from ourselves! <3 <3

Ps thanks so much for subscribing to my publication! After years in screenwriting I’m learning how to write prose and sharing my journey
I’m so happy to meet fellow writers on Substack so I hope we can keep in touch! Wishing you so much good luck on your journey!
Thanks Diane you too! I find it hard to find fellow writers on here, the algorithm sends me loud noisy stuff!

Thank you for reading, Jax! It’s totally terrifying! I try to laugh just to avoid falling into total despair!
I value that so much!

Enjoyed this. I’ve read some other AI convos before as well, always crazy
They are! Down with AI before it's too late! Thank you for reading!!
Oh dear! Glad this “tool” wasn’t around when I taught uni. 🙈😬 Seems marking would be an impossible task now. 😱😭🫶🏻
Thank you for reading!! And the <3! It's so miserable teaching right now--especially writing. Not sure how much longer I can take it!
😭😭😭 you’d think in writing they’d want to, you know, learn to write—using their own brains???? 🤯

Thank you for being such a lovely Substack friend! I appreciate you!
Oh yes! I remember the pay. 😬😱 the only benefit is all the time “off” so you can focus on your lovely writing. 🫶🏻🥰
