"I’m good at a lot of things! I am not my book!" I need to write this out and stick it up somewhere! Love this post, Diane, you have such a great attitude to writing... and life! x

Thank you so much for the support, Caroline! I so appreciate you!! ❤️

Fantastic super power list, Diane!

I'm extraordinarily good at powering through brain fog, and at reading for long stretches of time, but my true superpower lies in sensing other people's emotions. Another lesser known superpower is the ability to think of things I said 10, 15, 20 years ago and revise in my head how I could have said them better, or just cringe quietly. Usually I do this at 2 am.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting Sierra! I am thoroughly impressed by your superpowers. I can't claim any of them! Although I THINK I can sense people emotions, which probably stems from the giving a fuck superpower -- I'm just not sure i'm right about them, which adds to the element of guilt. But your lesser known superpower is like...torture. I mean you should try to work on the power of forgetting. I don't know what I'd do without it! A good memory is...woof. Killer.

Many many thanks again for reading and sending along the inspiration! So grateful!

Inspiring, Diane, as always! A long time ago, I worked at a summer camp, and we used to joke about mediocre superpowers (for example, always making the train). This brought me back (though your list is far from mediocre)!!

Diane Roth's avatar

Love that story, BB! But I'd consider "always making the train" a great superpower! It certainly beats the alternative!

Thank you so much for reading and commenting ❤️

You're right--I did need this laugh today.

My superpowers:

#1 I am FANTASTIC at being a sponge for other people's negative emotions

#2 I am SUPERB at numbing out when it all gets to be too much. I can disassociate like a sonofabitch.

#3 I am WONDERFUL at crafting made up scenarios in my head

#4 I a GREAT at the silent treatment

Diane Roth's avatar

Thank you so much for reading and commenting, Josie!! You have ME laughing now! Number #1 scares me for it's relatability! But maybe I'm not a sponge because I'm always asking myself "why are you a sponge for everyone's negativity?!" Now, I'll take inspiration from your numbers 2 and 3 because I have room for some improvement -- those would be fab superpowers. And the silent treatment? OMG, I'm terrible at that! The guilt!! I can't just can't with my giving a fuck superpower!

Thank you again for stopping by, Josie!!

I’ve been honing these skills since 1983.

Ok, so if you haven't done it yet, you MUST write about your childhood. Oh, the material!

We share the same bedtime reading superpower, Diane! High five!

I am in the querying trenches with yet another novel, too, so let's keep ploughing on in the belief that one day we will make it.

My daughters have flown the nest, but it doesn't stop me irritating them when we meet - not that they say so, but I guess that's what mothers do!

Good luck with querying - I believe in you :-)

Diane Roth's avatar

Thank you for reading and commenting, Hemmie! Our shared superpowers will have to sustain us through our latest query battles. We have to believe in victory! I am cheering for you, too!

Good one Diane. Very entertaining and if you haven’t written a comedy about teenagers yet I’d try that., but you might have to forget about rejection then too… Ps if an American can make an Englishwoman laugh you must be good!

Diane Roth's avatar

Thank you so much for reading an commenting Tracy! Oh man, to write about teenagers would be a twofer in the rejection column. Talk about superpower enhancement! And thank you making ME laugh this morning. Many thanks again for your support!

Holly Raynes's avatar

Thank you for this, Diane! I laughed and can relate to everything except I've never broken a bone/toe. I do have quite thick skin after years of feedback and rejection so I think that would be my superpower! Best of luck to you on this round of querying - wishing you many requests for fulls!

Diane Roth's avatar

Thank you so much for reading and commenting Holly! Good for you for your resilience superpower! I'm cheering you on, too! And many thanks for your support - I so appreciate it!!

Haha! Bravo to you! Midlife is a wonderful phase of not giving a f*&% (I'm employing my superpower of restraint for the benefit of those who might be lagging a few years behind the not giving a f*&% phase). It brings such clarity, as you have so eloquently spelled out.

Good luck on the querying. Stay clear of the shoes/tables/young adults, etc.

😄🌸

Thank you so much for reading Leonora! And for commenting! So glad you love your not-giving-a-f&^c stage!! Ah — and the superpower of restraint is a great one. I could use some practice on that one, maybe even in my posts! Certainly with my young adults - lol.

Many thanks again, and for the good wishes, too! I’ll need them!🩷

I read this post ON the treadmill 🤣

And I irritate my teenager at ALL times, not just the morning!

Diane Roth's avatar

I still haven’t gotten on! And I finished writing my post hours ago- lol!

And you might have me on the All-Day Irritating-Parent Superpower. But my question is do you irritate other teenagers, too? Just wondering if I have to broaden so you cover more ground.

Henny Hiemenz's avatar

I think mostly I just make other teens uncomfortable. You know, by the eye contact and normal human interaction!!!

Diane Roth's avatar

Yeah. They struggle with adult interaction. But I shouldn't talk. Maybe I do too???

Henny Hiemenz's avatar

No way you’re worse 🤣

Elaine R. Frieman's avatar

😅🤣🤣🤣 You’re too hilarious! Accurate description of querying. I have received all of those types of rejections. I have a feeling you’ll get a yes this time, though, esp if you’re querying your hilarious rom com. 🥰🫶🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Diane Roth's avatar

You’re so awesome, Elaine! Thank you for reading and commenting! And for the vote of confidence!! I’m keeping my chin up. Being on Substack helps so much because of people like you!! And yes, it’s the rom-com. Thank you again. Big hugs!! 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
